Open thread—News from Blighty
Vladimir Putin’s first destabilization op against the West proceeds apace.
News has just broken that John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons, will step down from his post on October 31, or earlier if an election is called.
Bercow has been a thorn in the side of the Tories and their wild-eyed pursuit of Brexit. While this is concerning, it’s not fatal. Things have spun out of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s hands, primarily because he’s a buffoonish incompetent. Maggie Thatcher he ain’t. and even the Iron Lady was eventually pushed out by her party. Johnson will most likely be forced to seek an extension to the Brexit deadline, and then will likely lose the election, with the likeliest outcome being a hung Parliament, with Labour and Liberal Democrats holding the majority of seats.
Brexit was the canary in the coalmine of a movement in the liberal West to undo the liberal world order. Putin saw an opportunity, and to this day is still stoking that flame. Hopefully, the British will see the error of their ways, and deal a defeat to Putin in the coming months, just as American citizens did in the 2018 midterms.
