Monday open thread—Civil war
No, I don’t think there will be a civil war if Donald Trump is impeached and removed, whatever his sycophants say.
And I know I’m writing this Sunday night, when Monday morning might bring even more explosions.
But I feel as if I must address Trump’s latest irruption of insanity.
Tonight, Trump quoted one of his most rabid evangelical pastors, who warned that if Trump were removed, his followers would take up arms:
This is unprecedented. Richard Nixon, in the depths of Watergate, never threatened that the “silent majority” would revolt at his removal. The supposed president of the United States is threatening civil war over his fate. This is, again, nothing other than sedition and treason.
This is such an egregious statement that a Republican congressman felt obliged to tweet this in response:
As Trump becomes more and more unhinged, facing his comeuppance, I believe that more and more of what’s left of sane Republicans will come to repudiate him, whether out of disgust or out of self-interest.
Little Lindsey Graham stated in 2016 that if the GOP nominated Trump, it would be destroyed. Although he’s now ignoring his own prophecy, it is coming to its fruition.
Trump and his enablers will go down in our history as our greatest traitors. They will destroy an entire political movement, salting the earth for any sort of extremism from the right. And by doing so, they will give hope to liberal in Hungary, and Poland, and Russia, and China, that a free people can stand against authoritarianism and secure their freedoms.
Far from a civil war, this will usher the destruction of the party which saw us through our only civil war. The irony is not lost on me. The party which saved the Union will be ripped apart by that very Union, now that it seeks to upend it.
