Just before I left work tonight, news broke from the Washington Post. The opening paragraph says it all:
President Trump told two senior Russian officials in a 2017 Oval Office meeting that he was unconcerned about Moscow’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election because the United States did the same in other countries, an assertion that prompted alarmed White House officials to limit access to the remarks to an unusually small number of people, according to three former officials with knowledge of the matter.
For almost three years, Trump has been telling everyone that he believed Russian president Vladimir Putin when he said he didn’t interfere in the 2016 election. Of course, we all knew that was a lie. But here the lie is laid bare, with unconcealed contempt.
You can call this nothing other than treason. We have to face up to the fact that we are in an undeclared war with Russia. Putin is using all of his skulduggery to subvert the West. He began with Britain in the Brexit referendum. He tested his wares out with Ukraine in 2014. And then he scored the trifecta in the election which installed Donald Trump in the White House. Given these facts, Trump is nothing but a traitor. And those who aid and abet him are likewise traitors.
I don’t think I can stress this enough: We are in a crisis which this nation has never faced. It may be a greater crisis than the Civil War, as our very foundations as a democratic society are at risk. We have a man in power who was not only installed by a foreign power, but actively connived with the foreign power to win an election. And according to the Post’s story, he gave Russia the green light to continue interfering in US elections. Again, I do not use this word lightly: this is treason.
The continuing revelations are going to keep increasing the support for this man’s removal. Democrats initiating impeachment proceedings have already ballooned support for the move. Every revelation adds fuel to the fire.
Republicans in the Senate are on notice: Your time is done. This man and you will be removed by the very democratic institutions which have served this nation for over 200 years and which you have striven to subvert and destroy. This country will not fall to your machinations, your lust for power, your hatred of democracy. You are nothing but fascists, and we’ve crushed them before. You, too, will be crushed. The choice is yours: Stand aside, or be utterly obliterated.
For those of us who cherish our freedoms, the path is clear. We must be brave. We must be bold. We must not falter in seeing this battle to its conclusion. As the first Republican president said, we are the last, best hope on earth against those who wish to turn the world into nothing but a playground for power.
