Open thread—Midweek news mishmash
What are a few of the things which have caught my attention today/this week? Here we go!
Well, of course yesterday’s big news was the sacking of The Occupant’s national security advisor John Bolton. It seems that the Mustache of Death was a little too warry for Donald Trump. News is breaking that Trump bruited about the idea of easing sanctions on Iran to grease the skids for peace talks. (Yes, this falls into the category of Trump causing a problem which others will then have to spend even more time and money fixing.) Bolton demurred, since real men go to Tehran, and the next day he was fired.
Now, you can say “Oh my God, Trump doesn’t want war!!!” It’s nothing of the sort. Trump thought he could get a win by being tough on Iran, and now he thinks he can get an elusive win by going to the table. He has no foreign policy; he just does what he thinks will look good on the news. Of course, the people who support him are more like Bolton than him with regards to Iran and other brown people. So expect this to blow up in his face as well.
Meanwhile in Blighty
A Scottish appeals court overruled a lower Scottish court and declared Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proroguing of Parliament illegal. I’d say “unconstitutional”, but unlike almost every other democracy in the world, the British have never seen the need to have a written constitution. Their constitution is all precedent and common law, which makes for messes like they have now. A court in England last week ruled that Johnson’s gambit was within his powers as prime minister. So now you have two courts in two different jurisdictions ruling differently, and there is no document which states what the prime minister’s actual powers are. Our constitution may have its hiccups, but at least we have something written down over which to argue. Good luck to you over there.
The Deep State Comes to Jerry Falwell Jr.
In schadenfreude news, Liberty University president and Trump ball-washer Jerry Falwell Jr issued a statement that he was in contact with the FBI to have it investigate a “conspiracy” at the school against him. This is after several staff of the university went public with details of double dealing at the institution, where staff members run business which get contracts from Liberty U while also drawing a paycheck, thus double-dipping. This comes on the heels of another pool-boy affair afflicting Falwell and the missus. I somehow doubt the FBI, even under Trump, is going to even bother getting involved. Guess Jerry had better hope that God’s listening and pray the trouble away. (As well as, it seems, the gay.)
