A few more thoughts on Michael Flynn
Unless you were under a rock last night, the blockbuster news involved Special Counsel’s Office prosecutors unsealing evidence in former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s case.
The evidence unsealed lays out in no uncertain terms both conspiracy to collude with Russia, and obstruction of justice in regards to Robert S. Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.
Today, of course, this is Donald Trump’s response:
WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME NOT TO OBSTRUCT???
This is laughable on its face. Acting Attorney General Sally Yates warned the transition team that Flynn was compromised two weeks before the Inaugural. President Barack Obama warned the transition team not to keep Flynn around. Aside from taking Donald’s face in their hands and yelling “DON’T HIRE FLYNN,” what more could have been done? This is nothing but Trump’s attempt to continue to gaslight his mouthbreathing followers. We have always been at war with Eastasia.
But of all the body blows to land on Trump, these may be the most damaging ones. These revelations do not come from anonymously-sourced media reports. These are official, sworn court documents. These revelations are The Truth™, as far as can be ascertained. It’s not the Failing New York Times making these claims. These aren’t even “claims,” but, again, sworn testimony. Even someone as addled as Trump knows he can’t depend on his usual rhetoric of “fake news.” Thus his whine that no one told him Flynn was a Russian agent—except that everyone did.
I think it’s getting through even Trump’s thick skull that the Flynn documents are orders of magnitude worse for him than any of the scoops by media outlets which have dogged him for two years. Flynn didn’t squeal to CNN; he gave damaging evidence to the special counsel’s office.
This, of course, impacts current Attorney General William Barr. He went out on a precarious limb to acquit Trump of all wrongdoing. The limb began to be sawed off by the release of the redacted Mueller report. Now he’s about to go into freefall with these revelations. Once the department publishes the transcripts of Flynn’s calls with Russian officials, Barr will be nothing so much as Wile E. Coyote falling to his comeuppance.
I know. We want Trump frogmarched out of the White House in handcuffs. We want Barr to be tarred and feathered. But, yes I will stress this again: there is a process. That sounds milquetoast and wimpy, but it’s true. Every bit of evidence that comes out adds more fuel to the fire. What the Flynn material provides is the proverbial smoking gun. It’s even on tape! We elected Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to do a job. Let’s not have a repeat of 2010 and the public option unicorn.
Hang tight, patriots. We’ll win this.
