Tuesday evening breaking news—Mueller's talking

Both the Washington Post and the New York Times are reporting that Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III complained to Attorney General William Barr that Barr misrepresented Mueller’s findings and was causing confusion among the public.

From the Post:

Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III wrote a letter in late March complaining to Attorney General William P. Barr that a four-page memo to Congress describing the principal conclusions of the investigation into President Trump “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of Mueller’s work, according to a copy of the letter reviewed Tuesday by The Washington Post.

That’s a polite way of telling his former boss that he is carrying water for Donald Trump.

It’s interesting that this is coming out just before the drama of Barr’s possible non-appearance before the House. Someone in the Department of Justice, or among Mueller’s allies, is kneecapping Barr and increasing the pressure on him.

The fact is that the long friendship between Mueller and Barr is at an end. Mueller remains the boy scout, while Barr traded in whatever credibility he had for no obvious reason.

While the story goes on to state that Mueller didn’t assert that Barr’s letter was inaccurate:

When Barr pressed him whether he thought Barr’s letter was inaccurate, Mueller said he did not, but felt that the media coverage of the letter was misinterpreting the investigation, officials said.

Of course, when the summary was crafted to exonerate Trump, the media can be forgiven for going with the top line.

The next two days will be damning for William Barr. He’s going to get grilled in the Senate by Democrats, a couple of whom are running for president. Meanwhile, he has to decide if he’s going to risk angering House Democrats and refuse to show up for their hearing. This story could not have broken at a worse moment for him, highlighting once again his bending over backwards to protect Trump.

Have a great night, folks.
