Weekend self-care open thread—The music of Declan MacManus

“Uncle LL, who the hell is Declan MacManus??”

“Well, my little one, that’s the birth name of none other than Elvis Costello!”

As I’ve written on these threads before, the wonderful thing about growing up Gen-X is that I was exposed to all sorts of music, not just what was hot on the radio at the time. Radio now is so segmented and ghettoized that kids today don’t know who the Beatles were, or John Coltrane, or Vivaldi. (OK, it also helps that my brothers were music fanatics.)

Eldest Brother of LL was and still is an aficionado of Mr. Costello. Costello has had one of the most interesting career arcs in popular music.

He started out in what was known as “pub rock”, a reaction to both punk and bands of the likes of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

He’s visited blues, jazz, and classical music in his 40 year career. He even composed a got damned ballet, for Pete’s sake! And, of course, his collaboration with Burt Bacharach is one of the most amazing albums of the past 20 years.

So allow me to share my complete admiration for this artist for this weekend’s self-care thread.

Share your favorite music, whomever the artist.

Take care of yourselves and those around you.
