A few thoughts on the Mueller report and its ramifications
The Mueller Report has finally been made public. You can read it here, among other places.
The report is damning. The only reason Robert Mueller didn’t indict Donald Trump was because Trump’s hand-picked fixer, William Barr, prevented him from doing so.
Trump right now is on Twitter saying that this report completely exonerates him. It does nothing of the sort. It’s a lurid indictment of his contacts with Russia and then his attempts to obstruct justice.
The question now is: what next?
At least to me, it’s very clear: the relevant House committees have to begin laying the groundwork for impeachment.
Politically, it would be catastrophic with Democratic voters if the House sat on its hands. But morally it would be even more so.
Yes, an impeachment process would wed Trump’s base even more fiercely to him. But it may not. This is not the Barr memo. This is a report which lays out criminality in the highest office. And at any rate, as shown in 2018, that Trump base isn’t enough to win against energized Democrats.
But I wish to speak about political morality, not expedience.
We are at a crossroads. We’ve seen this story before. A republic stands, deciding which road to take. We cannot endure as a free nation if the person occupying the land’s highest office is allowed to break the law with impunity. This goes beyond politics. This speaks to our very nature as a free republic. Impeachment was written into the Constitution specifically for instances like this. Trump cannot be allowed to assume Caesarian prerogatives and be allowed to escape without consequences. And I’m not convinced that the GOP Senate wouldn’t convict. This finally may be too far for 20 GOP senators.
Impeachment and its attendant investigations should be undertaken not out of political calculation, but because the very meaning of our republic is at stake. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a consensual sexual affair. Donald Trump is accused of undermining the very state. We cannot as a free people allow this to go unpunished.
As I wrote yesterday, this was going to be a blockbuster report. I just didn’t know how much. We’ve gone through the looking glass, and nothing is the same.
