Open thread—Score one for the hairless apes
This is the first ever image recorded by humans of a black hole—supermassive, even! (Insert Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” here.)
The image was compiled from the data of several planetary telescopes. That’s right, scientists of different countries from all over the world collaborated in the spirit of sheer discovery.
We are weighed down with all the malfeasance in which humans engage. War, murder, rape, despoliation. It can grind even the strongest down and make her wonder if our species has any future.
This image is my hopeful answer. We are an infuriating species. But we are capable of so much more than the 24 hour cable news headlines would indicate. We are capable of joy and wonder and exploration and greatness. If we are to have a future, we have to collectively value those traits over the ones which will destroy the world. And we are capable of doing so.
The photo is a political act, because it shows that we can be more than we are. Any kind of decent, human politics has to be geared to making us greater, not making us less.
