Weekend self-care open thread—Girl groups

I’ve often talked about the necessity of self-care as a strategy of resistance. The times are such that we’re buffeted left and right by winds of destruction, and if we don’t take time to renew and rejuvenate we’ll be empty husks. After the massacre in New Zealand, I think we need a pause for just that renewal.

I was listening to Little Steven’s Underground Garage on SiriusXM this week, and the subject of girl groups came up. These groups were teenage or young women, and their effect was revolutionary. For the 1950s and 1960s, the girl group was one of the dominant genres of popular music. The Supremes, the Shirelles, the Vandellas. The list goes on and on.

For this weekend’s self-care, and because it’s Women’s Month, some of the hits of these groups, beginning with the one which set everything in motion.

Again: Take care of yourselves and those around you.
