He blinked, he caved, he flew the white flag
Breaking news from CNN: The traitor in the White House has bent over and kissed his ass goodbye. He is agreeing to sign the spending bill negotiated between Democrats and Republicans, thus averting another shutdown.
He’s gone from saying “I have to study it, I’m not happy about it”, to meekly affixing his ridiculous signature to the bill. He really had no choice; there was every indication that if he vetoed, Republicans would bolt and help override his veto.
Let’s review what he gave up.
Democrats had offered $25 billion for his “border security” in exchange for a deal for DACA recipients. Everyone in Congress was on board with this deal; but Reinhard Heydrich clone Stephen Miller, who wants to round up everyone brown and place them in cattle cars, spoke into his ear like a bald Grima Wormtongue and talked him out of it.
Then, at the end of 2018, Congress again had a deal to keep the government open. But because it didn’t have funding for his pinche wall, Special Advisors to the President Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh lost their spleens, leading to the longest government shutdown in US history, one which Trump lost resoundingly.
Of course, he was threatening to declare an emergency at the border if Congressional negotiators didn’t come up with a plan by the new February 15 deadline, as well as shutting down the government again. Instead, the politicians came up with a deal, which is actually worse for Trump as far as border money goes: from $5.7 billion to $1.3 billion.
This is the deal he’s meekly accepting after braggadocio about not being happy with the bill. He’s going to take it because he has no other remedy. He’s going to take it because he entered office as the weakest president to hold the position in decades. He had no honeymoon, no inauguration bounce, which isn’t surprising as he lost the popular vote. He was buoyed for two years by an artificial GOP majority. Once that went away, much of his power ebbed away as well. What was a difficult political situation for him is now untenable.
This is on top of the Axios piece which details that Democrats plan to take what Bob Mueller is doing in regards to investigating Trump and Russia and inject anabolic steroids into it. Democrats plan to obliterate the “red line” Donald Trump set for Mueller, vis a vis his finances. Of course, we don’t know if Mueller is abiding by that red line; indications are that he’s obliterated it as well. But House Democrats are taking no chances. One way or the other, Trump will be gotten.
By acquiescing to legislators, Trump probably hopes to buy some political space. But it’s far too late for that. He was dead man walking once November 2018 came and went. Now he’s in the coffin, just waiting for the cremation. Shutting down the government yet again would have been one more check mark against him among so many others, one more piece of evidence that he’s a paid-for stooge for foreign powers. That he didn’t decide to burn everything down indicates that he knows his goose is cooked. I don’t want to sound like our version of Bill Palmer, but the caterwauling from the usual sectors that “Democrat extremism” will hand Trump a second term is utterly delusional. There is no way out for Trump now that Nancy Pelosi has the gavel. I’m not even talking about impeachment. That’s still an iffy proposition. But the mere fact that Democrats are going to have dramatic public hearings which will expose all his malfeasance will reduce his support to only those who attend his rallies. It will doom not only him in 2020, but his entire party. He didn’t burn everything down because what’s the point? It won’t change anything.
This will be the crunch year. As House investigations roll out, expect to see more surrenders like today’s from Trump. His delusions will ring more and more hollow as he realizes that any power he had has been stripped from him. He and his hangers-on must serve as a signal lesson of what happens to those who subvert our ideals.
