Election night open thread: Virginia, Kentucky and Mississippi returns
Major election news:
Upset in Kentucky: Democrat Andy Beshear is apparent Governor-Elect, having defeated "Trump before Trump" Matt Bevin.
Virginia goes blue: Democrats have won control of both houses of the Virginia legislature, shutting Republicans out of power.
As the polls close, let’s watch the results and talk here!
Just a reminder, folks, that today is election day in Virginia, Kentucky, and Mississippi.
Democrats have a great chance to flip the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate blue, shutting Republicans out of power in the elected branches of government. See our coverage of Virginia legislative races here, as well as important information for Virginia voters.
If Democrats win in Virginia, the state will finally ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
Kentucky is voting for Governor and Attorney General. Democrats can make Moscow Mitch mad if the state’s unpopular Republican governor Matt Bevin is replaced by Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear. Democrat Greg Stumbo is running to fill Beshear’s AG seat. See important information for Kentucky voters and our Kentucky coverage here.
Mississippi is the roughest of terrains for Democrats today, but where we don’t fight, we can’t win. Jim Hood, the Democratic candidate for governor and Mississippi state Attorney General, successfully prosecuted murders of civil rights workers, reduced homicides, and went after corporate predators. Jim Hood needs, and deserves, our support.
Other races: The New York Times has a complete list of races today, as well as returns.
