Election 2019 Situation Report: State and Local Races in Virginia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Minnesota
Everyone has their head focused on the 2020 elections, especially the presidential election. It is good to be paying attention to such a critical election, the most important in my short time here on earth.
However, there are important elections happening this year we must pay attention to, lest we give Trump and the GOP momentum. Before we begin, here is a useful link that will help you look up your polling place.
VIRGINIA LEGISLATIVE RACES:
Important info :
Deadline to request absentee ballot: 5 pm on Tuesday, October 29.

There is the matter of the state legislative races in Virginia. Democrats are poised to gain a trifecta in a state that was once the capital of the confederacy, being only two seats away in the state senate and in the state assembly from gaining a majority. In addition, a recent court ruling means that Democrats are no longer fighting in maps rigged to favor Republicans. Combined with a massive money advantage, Democrats are poised to wipe Virginia Republicans out of power.
As long as they fight tooth and nail for victory.
GOVERNOR’S RACES: KENTUCKY, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI
In addition, there are three Gubernatorial races going on this year. The elections are taking place in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Needless to say, these three races are going to be much harder to win than the Virginia legislature. Trump won all three states by huge margins: Louisiana by twenty percentage points, Mississippi by nineteen points, and Kentucky by thirty percentage points.
But thanks to the incumbency advantage in Louisiana, infighting among the GOP in both Louisiana and Kentucky (and to a lesser degree in Mississippi), and the decision to actually run good candidates by the Democrats in all three states, Democrats have a shot to win in all three of these ruby-red states. I will have posts ready shortly looking at all three states, the situations, the candidates, and ultimately the odds in these Republican Strongholds.
It will be a hard fight no matter what in these states.
But in order to carry the momentum forward into 2020, Democrats must flip the Virginia legislature from red to blue, and they must win at least one of the gubernatorial races this year. If Democrats can pull that off, then they are on track to win in 2020.
One last thing.
RAMSEY COUNTY, MN SPECIAL ELECTION
Important voting info:
Early voting: until Mon, 11/4
Election day: Tues, 11/5
Photo ID: Not required, unless same-day-registering.
In Ramsey County, Minnesota, we are having a race that could wipe the GOP out of county government. The Democrat running is named Nicole Joy Freethem, a policy professional who has spent her career helping children and families. I have met her in person, and she is both incredibly smart and compassionate. We could use her in office.
Democrats, we could use some help here.
