Today, the 116th Congress is being sworn in.

On the Senate side, things haven’t much changed. Republicans gained a net 2 seats, so they’ve retained control of the chamber, and will continue to offer supine allegiance to Donald Trump.

But on the House side, oh the times, they are a-changin’.

Democrats are back in the majority, with Nancy Pelosi set to be elected Speaker. The new majority will perform its constitutional duty of keeping the executive in check.

Of course, that executive is howling about “Presidential harassment”. Any curtailment of his power is an intolerable infringement. He’s gone through life being able to buy off any bad press or legal problems. He’s about to find out that this will no longer be the case while he occupies the office he illicitly purloined.

To those who are warning Democrats to not wallow in revenge: Oversight is not “revenge”. It’s what a co-equal branch is supposed to do. That you see it as payback shows the undue deference you give to the executive. A president isn’t king. A president is a servant, and as such is subject to checks and balances.

Strap in, kids. 2019 will be a hell of a ride.
