Slow news Friday
Forgive me for not getting to this quicker, but I slept straight through my phone blowing up.
This morning, dirty trickster Roger Stone was arrested by the FBI under orders from Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III in relation to the Trump/Russia affair. According to the BBC, Stone is being charged with:
Lying to the House Intelligence Committee about what transpired between him and Wikileaks
Lying to the committee about records of his interactions with Wikileaks
Witness tampering, for trying to keep his Wikileaks intermediary from telling the truth to Congress
Stone went on the Alex Jones program after being released on bond to say that the FBI had been very courteous in its pre-dawn raid, but averring that in no way would he plead guilty to the charges. In other words, as of now, he’s not going to make a deal and flip on Donald Trump.
Trump, of course, went on his greatest hits, tweeting about no collusion, witch hunt, and the usual argle-bargle.
The noose is now tightening around the Trump regime. Stone is the first person in the Trump orbit with direct contact with Wikileaks to be arrested and charged. Whether or not he cooperates is irrelevant; either way, a lot of information will come out. It’s almost better for the investigation if Mueller takes him to trial in open court and convicts him, as all of Stone’s—and Trump’s—dirty tricks will come out that way.
I know that for some this is moving slower than it seems it should. But by this time in Watergate, things weren’t so far along. And of course, in Watergate, Congress was in the hands of Democrats. Now that the House is under Nancy Pelosi’s stewardship, we should see an acceleration of the process.
What’s eternally stupefying is that this cabal thought it could get away with it. That all it had to do was get into the White House and they’d be free and clear, as if being installed in the presidency was the only requisite to total power. Our creaky system has taken a beating, but it’s still standing strong. All the checks and balances built into our government are what will ultimately prevent a dictatorship from arising.
Happy Friday, everyone. Roger Stone is going to jail.
