Open thread—Breaking news respects no time zone
I would like to take you back to the halcyon days of the Obama Administration.
There were two occasions when major news broke after 10pm EST: the passage of the ACA, and the icing of Osama bin Laden. That. Was. It. Other than that, Pres. Obama was so no drama that we could all rest easy after a long day at work.
Buzzfeed just broke a huge story. (Yes, we’re living in the timeline where Buzzfeed is a journal of record.) It reveals that Traitor Donald Trump personally ordered his former fixer, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress about the timeline on his involvement in the Trump Tower Moscow deal.
Now, let’s unpack that. Trump Tower Moscow, in and of itself, was not an illegal venture. But this played into the narrative that Trump was owned by Putin. So to dispel that narrative, Trump engaged in personal obstruction of justice. If he had just said: “Yes, I had a deal in the works, but it fell through,” no more would have been made of it. But by brazenly declaring that he’d had no dealings with Vladimir Putin, and then ordering underlings to lie about it, he turned a political liability into a criminal matter.
Suborning perjury is of course a felony. One might even say a “high crime and misdemeanor.” Buzzfeed reports that Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III obtained evidence of Trump ordering Cohen to lie prior to Cohen spilling his guts. So this doesn’t depend on the word of a known liar, even one seeking redemption.
This is undoubtedly one of the things Trump’s moron lawyer Rudy Giuliani was worried about coming out when he went off the rails last night. But it’s probably not the only thing. I commented last night that Thursday and Friday would be lit. I was right about today. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.
