The incredible lightness of being Joe Lieberman

The incredible lightness of being Joe Lieberman

As we all know, yesterday one-time Democrat and full-time asshole Joe Lieberman opined in an interview that he didn’t think that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the future of the Democratic Party, or at least he hoped she wasn’t. Of course, he said this on that clarion ledger of leftist politics [puts on reading glasses] the Neil Cavuto show on Fox Business Channel.

Last night, Ocasio-Cortez clapped back:

Now, as readers of this space know, I’m not AOC acolyte. She may be great. She may be a disaster. She may fade into obscurity. Two weeks in office isn’t enough of a data set to make a determination. And I don’t think AOC herself is the “future of the Democratic Party”.

However, what sclerotic dinosaurs like Joe Lieberman fear is what Ocasio-Cortez represents. She represents a party which is no longer the preserve of white males like Lieberman. She represents a party which is browner and has more people with vaginas. She represents a new coalition which melds urban and suburban voters, the educated, the young, and dispenses with the rural vote. It is a party speaking to the emergent America, not the one wallowing in its own pathologies.

Ocasio-Cortez is a convenient short-hand for all that ails the country, as people like Lieberman see it. She’s young, female, and brown. She elbowed out a long-time politician. She represents a Democratic Party charting a new route to electoral success which doesn’t depend on the people Lieberman depended on. Men like Lieberman see in Ocasio-Cortez their own demise—the demise of their power and privilege. No wonder he hopes she’s not the future, because secretly he knows she is.

The fact that people like Lieberman and Bernie Sanders, also not a Democrat, are so up in arms about the direction of the party is an indication that we’re doing something right. The old system pushes back when a new one is being born. Sanders, for all his protestations about being an outsider, is as inside as you can get, he’s just awful at it. And, of course, Lieberman is an asshole.

This is all to say that the man who condemned Bill Clinton, sabotaged Al Gore’s campaign, ran against the Democrat who beat him in a primary, voted for McCain over Obama, and helped to bend the ACA to GOP dictates, can have a heaping cup of shut the fuck up. We real Democrats will decide the party’s future, not him.
