Friday open thread—And YOU get immunity, and YOU get immunity!
This week certainly seems like the dam has broken.
Paul Manafort's conviction and Michael Cohen's allocution and fingering Donald Trump as a co-conspirator have loosened the floodgates.
Yesterday it was revealed that National Enquirer supremo David Pecker is not only cooperating with Robert Mueller under a grant of immunity, but that he stored spiked Trump stories in a safe like some two-bit gangster. And today, the Wall Street Journal reports that Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg has also been granted immunity to testify about Trump's company's skulduggery.
It's no surprise that a man who shows no loyalty to anyone is now being betrayed left and right by people who have no desire to go to jail for him. Far from being the all-powerful dictator some pundits keep braying about, Trump is now being given a master class on the limits of his authority and the enduring strength of American institutions. For some who want to do away with federalism, the shitstorm falling on Trump is a result of that federalism. Washington is not the only locus of power, and that will be Trump's downfall.
So as we head into the weekend, know this: the good guys are winning. The fight is far from over, but the arc is clear.
