Open thread—The longest day
No, I'm not talking about yesterday's primaries.
On this day in 1944, the Western Allies launched the long-awaited liberation of Europe. British, American, and Canadian troops landed at Normandy to crack Hitler's Fortress Europa.
It was a close-run thing. Dwight Eisenhower had two speeches prepared: One for if the landings were successful, the other for if the landings ended in disaster. Fortunately, for the world's sake, and despite a hard fight on Omaha Beach, he never had to read that second speech.
As the specter of fascism rears its ugly head again over the Western world, today should be a day to stop and remember this salient fact: We beat them before. We will have to beat them again.
