Open thread—In the widening gyre
When the world seems out of control, people start referencing W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming", as a distillation of fear and anxiety.
With all the revelations which have come out over the past eight to nine days, it does indeed seem as if the "centre cannot hold", and "mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." And as if our political situation isn't chaotic enough, the man who orchestrated this chaos just announced that his country developed a nuclear-powered cruise missile which can evade any anti-missile systems. The worst are surely full of passionate intensity.
It's hard to soldier on in the face of such calamities. But as another Irishman, Samuel Beckett, said: You must go on. I can't go on. I'll go on. It's really all we can do, unless we wish to lie supine in the face of evil.
