I enjoy watching competitive sports. It can bring out the best in people and provide them with the opportunity to strife to new heights. The four minute mile seemed unattainable until someone broke it and after it was broken others began to be able to break it as well because it became perceived as attainable.
I enjoy and value competition in other fields of endeavor as it can open the door to new creative ideas but competition for basic human needs has no place in a civilized society. No one should have to compete in order to survive. It is barbaric.
As we know the system has been skewed in the favor of fewer and fewer people at the expense of everyone else. If we were to switch up the competition for survival and changed it lets say to a running race I think that most of those who have been the winners of the competition would object because they would likely find themselves as the losers and would therefore have to suffer from the lack of access to basic human needs which is a condition that they have inflicted on others and they would be ill equipped to survive.
Everything needs everything else in order to continue to exist. This is perhaps the most basic law of life. We are an interconnected interwoven whole. Nothing can exists independently from everything else. We are a seemingly infinite mass of need.
There are people who believe that when someone is in need that they are vulnerable and therefore easy to prey on and exploit. They view need as a weakness when in reality that we need is the source of our strength. By attempting to cut people off from the needs that they have for personal gain they are likely to think they are smart and clever but by engaging in this behavior they are on the road to self destruction. They going against one of the basic laws of life and when you go against a basic law of life you cause friction and suffering and destruction and because they are inseparable from everything else they are engaging in an act of self destruction. Need is the universal binding force and by cutting other people off from the needs that they have eventually the chickens will come home to roost. The law of cause and effect will eventually come back to bite them.
The predators of the world are beginning to realize that they are an endangered species which is what lead to the election of Donald Trump and this realization is why they are behaving in acts of desperation. They don't want to come to terms with the harm that they have done. They are living in fear of having to experience the harm they have caused to everyone else. But the harm they have caused is so great that it has changed the balance of power and now they are vastly outnumbered as the law of karma is beginning to play out. They are on the wrong side of history and their time is coming to an end.
Living in a world where competition is how things are structured and therefore where there are winners and losers and where being a loser means that you are cut off from accessing basic human needs is an unsustainable system. If it is unsustainable then we are going to need to change to a system that is sustainable. President Obama has always said that he has faith in the people of this country that we are creative and that we have the capacity to find creative solutions to our challenges. I agree with him.
Because need is the binding universal force we are going to have to find a way to live in harmony with this basic law of life otherwise we will cause harm and therefore suffering and because we are connected the harm we will be causing will be to everyone and everything including ourselves. We need to be able to be safe being in this world and feeling the presence need in us. Because when we need we feel vulnerable we need to create a world where we do not see vulnerability as a sign of weakness but as a place of unmet need where a need is in need of being met. We need to be able to experience being open because it is only in an open space and with an open heart that we will be able to be open to new solutions.
Competition is energizing and exciting in certain fields of endeavor but it is clear that going forward that we are going to have to structure a society that honors our diversity and our interconnectedness and we are going to need to apply ourselves to the challenge of creating a different structure. We are the change. We are the majority. We understand the necessity and together we have the creativity and the resources to change direction and the time for change has come.
