Just like in 2016, decency is on the ballot. Empathy is on the ballot. Democracy is on the ballot.
This is not the regular biennial ritual where barely 35% of the electorate bothers to vote. This is an existential moment. No, if we lose it won’t be the end. But it’ll make the reconstruction all the more difficult.
We got it horribly wrong in 2016. I know; Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. In any other country, she’d be president right now. And Trump didn’t “win”, but was rather installed. However, enough of the country sided with Trump to allow his installation. It will forever be a dark mark against the Republic.
Today we have a chance to claw back our country. Today we have a chance to show the world that we’re not the country that voted in a failed talk-show host, suffering from dementia, a white supremacist, a base misogynist, a virulent xenophobe. We have a chance to show the world that was an aberration, one which we will rectify, and to trust again in the good graces of this community.
The world is awash with Trumps. One just won in Brazil. Today is our chance to declare that he is done here. And then to work with the rest of the world to rid themselves of their fascists.
As Google says: Go Vote. It’s your greatest responsibility as a citizen.
