No honor among thieves
Well, it finally happened.
Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former consigliere, is fully on Team Mueller, or at least saving his own skin.
Today he plead guilty to lying to Congress when he testified before it that his former boss had not been working on a Trump Tower deal in Moscow during the 2016 campaign
Trump, of course, says EVERYONE knew that he was working on the deal. Which is a lie. The deal only came to light in 2017. Now the question is: was this one of the questions that Robert Mueller asked Trump, and did Trump lie? If he did, and in light of today’s plea deal, then he walked straight into perjury.
The other big news is that the only bank which would loan money to Trump and Jared Kushner, Deutsche Bank, had its New York City offices raided by the FBI. Coincidence? One can only surmise. But it’s not good news for either of them, as Deutsche Bank is involved in a web of criminality all over the world, much of it related to Russia and its oligarch mobsters, who, of course, are woven into Vladimir Putin’s state.
In late breaking news, Chicago alderman Edward Burke’s offices were raided as well. Who is Burke? Up until this summer, his law firm represented Donald Trump. Again, as with Deutsche Bank, the raid may not be Trump related. But the coincidence is too telling not to make assumptions.
And to add to the chaos, Trump has cancelled his G-20 meeting with Putin, using Ukraine as an excuse. One can only assume that his advisors told him that going cap in hand to Vladimir while the Cohen news broke would make him look even worse, if that was possible. Trump cares nothing about Ukraine. He’s in full survival mode.
We had all been hoping for the dam to burst, but I don’t think any of us knew what that would look like. Now we do. We can only assume that Mueller was waiting to see which way the winds would blow in the midterms and tailor his tactics to them. Now that Democrats will have the gavel in the House, it seems he’s going full sail.
Many doubted that Mueller, a life-long Republican, would do anything to damage Trump. But Mueller is not a Trumpist Republican. He’s the kind of Republican who views Trump and his acolytes as stains on the American fabric. Rod Rosenstein knew this when he selected him. He won’t save the party; that’s dead. But he will help save the Republic.
Strap in, kids. Again, it’s not even December yet.
