The Zodiac Killer wants to strike again
As we take a break from two days of blockbuster news, I turn my attention to an old, tried and true friend. Eduard Rafael “Ted” “Zodiac Killer” Cruz wants to use reconciliation in the lame duck session to repeal and not replace the Affordable Care Act, aka ACA, aka Obamacare, aka something which is now really really popular.
Shortly after winning reelection this month, Ted Cruz implored his Republican colleagues at a private lunch to use the GOP’s last days of unified control in Washington to ram through a boatload of conservative priorities.
The Texas senator urged Republicans to use budget reconciliation before Democrats take the House in January and that they do things like overhaul Obamacare, fund the border wall and chip away at regulations, according to attendees. Cruz argued this would be the GOP’s final chance to deploy the powerful party-line voting maneuver, which Republicans used to cut taxes last year while avoiding a Democratic filibuster.
But even Mitch McConnell’s band of misfits is none too sanguine about stepping on that landmine.
His colleagues were unmoved. To them, it was just one more request in a sea of them in this lame-duck session. Among items on the wish list from various Republican factions: more tax cuts, a new trade deal, criminal justice reform, full funding of the border wall, a farm bill, protecting special counsel Robert Mueller and confirmation of a slew of nominees.
“Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody’s ready to take the trip,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.). “I mean, if we want to get everything done we’re going to have to work past next week. It’s just that simple. And everybody wants to quit at 4 o’clock so they can go home to watch ‘Wheel of Fortune.’ And nobody wants to work on the weekends.”
Yes. We have Republican laziness to thank, in part, for the attempt to ram through conservative goodies before Nancy gets the gavel for its failure.
But, Jesus, man. ACA repeal? Again? After you were handed your ass dozens of times—the last time by your own caucus?
Even in the Twilight of the Gods, the lure of hurting people is too much to pass up for Eduardo Rafael and his ilk. They’re not even keeping up the pretense of replacing Obamacare with some mythical “better” plan. They want bankruptcies, recisions, pre-existing conditions, and outright death to be the norm for our healthcare system. Healthcare is reserved only for those who “deserve” it, and even then it comes with ropes attached.
One has to wonder what childhood trauma affected men like Cruz to want to inflict so much pain on so many people. No rational concept of “liberty” can accommodate such a cold disregard for humanity. To them, liberty is a golden calf, and anything which obstructs their view of its workings is a moral evil. If millions have to suffer, then so be it.
This is a pathology which didn’t arise with Donald Trump. It’s been the Republican view since before Barry Goldwater, and has only worsened in its virulence. November 6, 2018 was a great victory. But it was only one battle in a long war.
