Weekend self-care open thread—John Lewis adverts
So, as anyone who reads this blog on a regular basis knows, I’m am an inveterate Anglophile. This isn’t to say that I don’t recognize the fuckery caused by the Empire. But I can’t help it that I was watching British programs from my childhood on PBS. That ingrains certain attitudes in one.
For the past 10 years or so, the kickoff to the festive season in the UK has been the debut of retailer John Lewis’ Christmas ads. Yes, I know what you’re thinking: Oh, how can a Christmas commercial be any good?. But if you consider advertising to be a sort of art, then the John Lewis adverts are the Mona Lisa of them. They never fail to capture both the joy and pain of the festive season.
So, for this weekend’s self-care thread, I present you some of their commercials, starting with this year’s offering. It stars Sir Elton John.
At this writing, I just finished watching Moz the Monster. I cried.
May we begin a season of blessings and love.
