The assassination of Jamal Khashoggi
It is now rather evident that Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi was lured to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, where he was assassinated. Khashoggi was also a US resident and writer for the Washington Post. Furthermore, the Post’s reporting states that US intelligence services knew about the threat to Khashoggi’s life, yet did nothing to warn him.
Khashoggi was also a critic of Donald Trump, as well as of the Saudi regime. No doubt Trump didn’t even know who Khashoggi was; if he didn’t appear on Fox News, he wouldn’t have entered his view. But, did people around Trump see Khashoggi as an irritant and allowed him to meet his fate?
Even for this regime, that’s a hard pill to swallow. Most likely, those close to Trump, like Jared Kushner, saw this as a solid they could do for the Saudi regime, and told the intelligence services to do nothing to interfere. This makes it no less horrific.
A US resident was left to be killed out of deference to an authoritarian regime. It’s a short step from that to leaving US citizens to their own devices when they prove inconvenient to the Trump cabal. Any American traveling abroad now has to wonder if he or she can rely on his or her country should they be in danger. Oh, I’m sure Christian pastors who get rolled up in a conspiracy will be fine. But will the State Department investigate how an American in trouble voted in 2016 before offering assistance? This is a very real question now.
With the Khashoggi affair, we are once again reminded just how far from normal we are. The damage this cabal is causing will be hard to put right.
