Remember their names
Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche.
Ricky John Best.
Micah David-Cole Fletcher.
These are the 3 men who were attacked by a crazed right wing terrorist in Portland while defending two young Muslim women in hijabs from him. (I will not mention the terrorist's name.) Taliesin and Ricky gave their lives for fellow human beings; Micah, thank goodness, survived.
In the era of Trump, expect more of his unhinged followers to act out in such a way. We're already seeing it. The Portland attack was simply the latest and deadliest example.
But, in the era of Trump, expect more of us to stand up and say "No", even at the risk of our own lives.
This is a war we're in. The Civil War never ended. What happened to Germany post-World War II was what needed to happen to the South and the idea of white supremacy. It never did. And today we're living with those consequences.
The work of this generation will be to finally bring a conclusion to the Civil War, and end the work left unfinished in the Reconstruction. Until the ideas which led to the war are expunged, we will always be at the mercy of men like Trump, and men like Taliesin, and Ricky, and Micah, will have to put their lives at risk fighting the war.
