Enemy of the people
No, I don't mean the press.
Today, psychotic president Donald Trump sent out this tweet:
I don't need to belabor the point. This goes far beyond what Richard Nixon did. It does so because Nixon didn't have the direct means of communication with his followers that Trump does. Trump has basically branded all independent media as an enemy not only of his, but of the Republic's. This is nothing short of fascism.
Again, the saving grace is that this isn't Weimar Germany. The free press in this country has a long history. It won't be overturned by the ravings of a demagogue whose regime is fast sinking under its own weight. But this makes it no less dangerous. A president of the United States has declared war against nearly every institution of this country. The press, the intelligence community, the opposition party, those who voted against him. It's unprecedented.
How much more does Trump have to do or say before House Speaker Paul Ryan finds his testicles and declares him to be an enemy of the people to be removed by the means the Constitution provides? A republic dies because its watchers decide on expediency over principle.
