Resistance is not futile, patriots
Today I learned that was a meme among the rabid right during the Obama years. I'm reclaiming it.
Leonard Pitts, Jr., of the Miami Herald, has a few choice words for supposed president Donald Trump.
Dear Mr. So-Called President:
So let me explain to you how this works.
You were elected as chief executive of the United States. I won’t belabor the fact that you won with a minority of the popular vote and a little help from your friends, FBI Director James Comey and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The bottom line is, you were elected.
And this does entitle you to certain things. You get your own airplane. You get free public housing. You get greeted with snappy salutes. And a band plays when you walk into the room.
But there is one thing to which your election does not entitle you. It does not entitle you to do whatever pops into your furry orange head without being called on it or, should it run afoul of the Constitution, without being blocked.
Although the media was not kind to President Barack Obama, it never treated him with the open contempt evinced here. And it's been only four weeks since Trump's inauguration.
Of course, it would havebeen quite salubrious for the Republic had this vitriol been aimed at the great orange beast a few months before November 8, 2016. But that's no longer here nor there. We are where we are, and we have to work with what we have.
I'm old enough to remember the astro-turfed Tea Party being held up as an example of a grass-roots revolution against Obamanian tyranny. What's going on now makes the Tea Party look like what it really was: a collection of scared white people aghast that a black man had a say over their lives. People of every color, creed, gender, sexual persuasion, immigration status, are marching en masse to let the putative Fourth Reich know that they will resist, and will not go gentle into that dark night. Today is Day Without an Immigrant, where immigrants from all across the country are participating in that rarest of events, a general strike, letting the nation know just what would happen were they all to disappear into a Trumpian gulag.
Certain sectors of the liberal intelligentsia (I'm looking at you, Slate) have thrown in the towel, consigned to the belief that nothing will stop Trump. It's as if the energy unleashed across the country is having no effect on these Eeyores. Yes. It's going to be awful. But it would exponentially more awful were there not a concerted resistance. Rather than wallowing in defeatism, these liberals need to get their heads out of the sand and take note of what's actually happening on the ground. People are not accepting the fate foisted upon them by an illegitimate regime. They are showing that they deserve the appellation "American". Get on the train or get out of the way.
I end with Mr. Pitts' closing words.
But you did. You see, you’re no longer an emperor, Mr. So-Called President. You’re now what is called a “public servant” — in effect, an employee with 324 million bosses. And let me tell you something about those bosses. They’re unruly and loud, long accustomed to speaking their minds without fear or fetter. And they believe power must always answer to the people. That’s at the core of their identity.
Yet you and your coterie of cartoon autocrats think you’re going to cow them into silence and compliance by ordering them to shut up and obey? Well, as a freeborn American, I can answer that in two syllables flat.
