Open Corruption: Why Republican Hubris Will Be on the Ballot in 2018
See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
As 2017 draws to a close, I've been thinking a lot about that phrase. The pictorial maxim rooted in Japanese culture has taken on a western interpretation to symbolize those who turn a blind eye to impropriety. For the past 11 months, we've witnessed a multitude of misconduct from those entrenched in the highest levels of our government. A previous time with secret backroom deals and clandestine transactions has now devolved into open treason coordinated through emails and Facebook messenger. Senators are receiving kickbacks, administration officials are hooking up their hometown companies, and the president of the United States is personally profiting off the presidency all right in front of our very eyes. In fact, short of walking around with burlap sacks labeled with a huge dollar sign, Republicans have been gleefully willing to flaunt their corruption in public for the entire country to see.
But their hubris has not gone unnoticed.
Robert Mueller, III and his team of prosecutors are following the money, right before our very eyes. Bob Corker's name will forever be associated with open corruption, which is not something he had hoped on his farewell tour. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke's hometown Whitefish Energy lost out on potentially scamming the people of Puerto Rico out of $300 million dollars due to public outcry. And despite blatantly violating the Emoluments Clause, Donald Trump has seen a huge loss of business both domestically and abroad causing his chest-thumping net worth to decline by $600 million this year alone.
By conducting their business in the way that they have, Republicans have given living, breathing anecdotal evidence of their concern for rich Americans and corporations and nobody else. They now own the Tax Bill, an insidious monstrosity that gives tax breaks for those who own private jets and takes away tax credits for those who teach our children. This was a bill that passed without a single Democratic vote and without any input whatsoever from the Democratic Party. Republicans have also failed to protect Americans workers despite an ungodly amount of campaign promises to do so. This includes widespread job losses in the steel, coal, and automotive industries as both automation and outsourcing have given corporations all the incentives they need to maximize profits at the expense of the American worker. Despite constant calls that he could, and would, "bring back the jobs", Donald Trump's first year in office has been less productive than Barack Obama's last year in office, despite having inherited a growing and robust economy.
The public sees this and is taking notice.
After huge victories in New Jersey, Virgina, and Alabama, Democrats are poised for a political tsunami in 2018. Because unlike previous corrupt administrations, the Trump crime family is both too stupid and too conceited to hide their corruption and the American people are taking notice. It's why Trump's approval rating continues to hit new lows as Republicans haven't done a single thing in the past year to help anyone other than their rich donors. Their tax bill may play great for the Koch brothers, the Mercer family, and Sheldon Adelson but for an administration's only political "victory" for an entire year to have a 66% disapproval rating does not endear the administration to anyone outside of their already brainwashed base. Contrary to popular belief, Julie in the suburbs is not particularly excited about the $22.4 million estate tax exemption given to already wealthy families.
This administration is evil. The care nothing for the everyday American. Their policies have sought to divide and conquer historically underrepresented people. They've stoked the flames of hatred to give rise to American Nazism. They've ignored basic science and have sought to silence those who dare to use science to justify a policy position. They've decimated the State Department and have officially become the Mean Girl that nobody cares for at every international conference. They've sought to undermine the investigation delving into the cyber-terrorist attack perpetrated by the Russians during our sacred and sovereign political election. They've discontinued popular programs protecting children and immigrants simply because those programs were started by people with the last names 'Clinton' and 'Obama.' And they've done all this assuming that the American people would not notice or care enough to do anything about it.
The American people have seen what Republicans are up to. They have heard their lies. They have spoken out in record numbers. It's now time to bury Republicans into the dustbin of history. Republicans must be thoroughly defeated in 2018 and be made to pay for what they have done to our Republic. It will not be easy. There will be bumps in the road. There will be heart-breaking and gut-wrenching days. But in the end, like a great battle, our nation will emerge stronger and more resilient than ever.
And this evil will be thoroughly extinguished.
