Suffering from Self-Inflicted Wound, Boehner Crumbles on Funding DHS

Both Reuters and TPM are reporting that House Speaker John Boehner has surrendered the epic battle he promised last year to fight President Obama "tooth and nail" on his executive actions on immigration - a battle to which the funding of the Department of Homeland Security he has thus far held hostage.

Boehner laid out three paths to his members in a weekly meeting, according to a source in the room: shutting down DHS, another short-term stopgap bill, or the Senate-passed clean DHS bill. He said the first two weren’t good options.

”With more active threats coming into the homeland, I don’t believe that’s an option,” Boehner said of a shutdown. “Imagine if, God forbid, another terrorist attack hits the United States.”

Wingbats are upset, of course, but the injury to the GOP here is of course entirely self-inflicted, not that that makes it any less fun to watch. Democrats played their card incredibly well, knowing that Republicans would never actually shut down DHS. So they called Boehner's bluff as Democratic senators blocked any attempt to "conference" anything but a clean funding bill.

Update: And the surrender is complete as the House has passed the Senate's clean bill to fund DHS and the fuming has begun on the Right field of the Interwebs.
