Rick Santorum's dog whistle: Obama's "radical Islamic policies"

Sure that was a gaffe...
Rick Santorum’s spokeswoman Alice Stewart said in a TV interview on Monday that Santorum was referring to President Barack Obama’s “radical Islamic policies” when he said the president’s agenda was driven by “phony theology” — but then quickly called up MSNBC after the segment aired to say she misspoke.

“There is a type of theological secularism when it comes to the global warmists in this country. That’s what he was referring to. He was referring to the president’s policies in terms of the radical Islamic policies the president has,” Stewart said on “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”
This is not a misspeak. This is  a dog whistle. This is a dog whistle telling the Republican primary voters and wingnut candidates for various offices that it was time to start running on the racist and Islamophobic theme that President Obama is a black (Kenyan) Muslim.

That they were going to stoop to this level isn't a surprise. I was only waiting to see who goes here first this time around. The Republicans have discovered that they cannot run on the economy. For one thing, the economy is improving under Barack Obama. For another, their plans for the economy is to concentrate greater wealth in fewer hands. They can't run on national security. See dead bin Laden. So now they are reviving their tried and true tactic: run on radical social issues and spread the whisper campaign that Obama is not American.

Expect more of this. Expect a revival of birtherism. Expect blatant racism, fear mongering and "otherizing" of the President. Expect it all because the President's opponents have nothing to run on. They have no accomplishments of doing anything for the American people - and the ones who do (like Romneycare) have vowed to never do it again. Expect all of this because they have nothing else and they are desperate. Expect it because they have nothing to sell but fear and hatred.

This is only the beginning. You think it was ugly in 2008 and 2009? You think it was ugly when the Tea Party portrayed the President as a witch doctor with a bone through his nose? You think it was ugly when they sang about the "magic negro?" You think it was bad when they posted cartoons about shooting a chimp while referring to President Obama's health reform? You ain't seen nothin' yet.
