Impeach Him!

That's what the pretend-Leftists said when the president of the United States, in accordance with our treaty obligations and a United Nations resolution, decided to join a NATO air action to stop Libyan dictator Mommar Gaddafi from using his air power to violently suppress his country's democratic uprising. And today, the news came that Gaddafi has been killed in a firefight with the Libyan rebels. The President made these remarks on that occasion:

[This] is a momentous day in the history of Libya. The dark shadow of tyranny has been lifted. And with this enormous promise, the Libyan people now have a great responsibility -- to build an inclusive and tolerant and democratic Libya that stands as the ultimate rebuke to Qaddafi’s dictatorship. We look forward to the announcement of the country’s liberation, the quick formation of an interim government, and a stable transition to Libya’s first free and fair elections.
The president also announced that the NATO mission will soon come to an end now that Gaddafi is dead.

Though the Libyan rebels achieved this great victory and the credit belongs in lion's share to the people of Libya, this is yet another vindication of the foreign policy that this president has pursued. The president has taken the fight to those who would do harm to the United States, but he has used the power of the United States for good rather than to thumb his nose at the rest of the world. He has worked with our allies, earned back their trust, and taken on our enemies. He has defined achievable goals and charged our military and intelligence communities with them rather than miring us in endless war adventures. Because of this president, today:

  • Osama bin Laden is dead, thanks to a SEAL operation ordered by President Obama.
  • Al Queda's global terror network is severely weakened.
  • Anwar Al-Awlaki, Yemen's Al Queda leader and Al Queda's chief promoter to the western world, is also dead, thanks to a drone strike ordered by President Obama.
  • Mommar Gaddafi is now dead, a result of President Obama deciding to strengthen the hands of rebels through NATO air action.
While the president has done all of the above, with his action in Libya, he has sent an unmistakable message to the Arab and Muslim world: the United States stands by the human aspirations of liberty, freedom and self-government, and that our fight is not with the Arab world. Our fight is with those who seek to harm, kill and terrorize the innocent, the victims of whom are disproportionately Muslim and Arab.

This is the place where President Obama succeeded and President Bush failed. By attacking Iraq, Bush added fuel to the fire of Arab and Muslim resentment of Americans, he alienated our friends and made America and the rest of the world less safe. Obama, on the other hand made clear who our targets were by actually going after the targets. Instead of resentment, President Obama showed the Arab world that we are on their side.

Neither the pretend-Left nor the psycho-Right ever understood that nuance in American foreign policy. Neither side of the ideological bobbleheads ever realized that it is not enough to simply say that we are fighting a different kind of battle against stateless terrorists. For the Left, it is not enough to simply say that we should go after those who plan on harming Americans in a precise and targeted way rather than causing wars all over the place. The ideologues have never and will never acknowledge how difficult it is to reach that balance, that point of a different kind of battle to protect the United States. That's why they cry about impeachments and try to fit everything into their frames of imagination.

The Right thinks the president's refusal to cause global war makes him eligible for impeachment, and the whiny Left thinks that anything he does that involves the use of a drone, no matter how targeted, is an all out war. Both sides are missing the boat. And frankly, the boat's left the harbor a while back.

But President Obama is the one person who got it. And that's why he's getting it done.

America is safer today than we were three years ago. And the reason is Barack Obama.
