The above quote is taken from a blistering article written by retired staffer Mike Lofgren. He published an article in Truthout titled "Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult".
PLEASE READ THE FULL ARTICLE.
I read the article last night and my fears with regards to the craziness unfolding before me were confirmed. The Republican Party is no more. It has been absorbed by the unhinged and they are now in the position to take the Presidency. When the Democratic Party stayed home in 2010 they all but opened the door to crazy and invited them in. Now they are about to consolidate. Is it possible the Dems will let it happen? We have much to worry about if President Obama cannot pull this election off and win.
Mr Lofgren says it in his own words:
To those millions of Americans who have finally begun paying attention to politics and watched with exasperation the tragicomedy of the debt ceiling extension, it may have come as a shock that the Republican Party is so full of lunatics. To be sure, the party, like any political party on earth, has always had its share of crackpots, like Robert K. Dornan or William E. Dannemeyer. But the crackpot outliers of two decades ago have become the vital center today: Steve King, Michele Bachman (now a leading presidential candidate as well), Paul Broun, Patrick McHenry, Virginia Foxx, Louie Gohmert, Allen West. The Congressional directory now reads like a casebook of lunacy.Anyone who is reasonable can see this clearly but somehow it seems as if this hostile takeover of one of our major parties is not being taken very seriously. Yes, I know many of us on the left have been saying that things have become unhinged in the Republican Party but who listens to us?
We are now in a strange universe and at a major crossroads when it comes to politics in this country. If the country does not wake up we will be in a dire position in 2013.
Mr. Lofgren makes it clear in his article that the MSM is at fault for this when he notes that:
"The media are also complicit in this phenomenon. Ever since the bifurcation of electronic media into a more or less respectable "hard news" segment and a rabidly ideological talk radio and cable TV political propaganda arm, the "respectable" media have been terrified of any criticism for perceived bias. Hence, they hew to the practice of false evenhandedness. Paul Krugman has skewered this tactic as being the "centrist cop-out." "I joked long ago," he says, "that if one party declared that the earth was flat, the headlines would read 'Views Differ on Shape of Planet.'And this whole situation is not helped by the "low information voters" who are blinded and brainwashed by the lies of the Republicans.
I for one am not taking them forgranted. I can see with my own eyes that they are serious and I took them seriously way before the debt ceiling situation. They do not have fear of the climate changing, of Wall Street failing or economy falling off a cliff because they truly believe that if these things happen they are meant to happen.
How can you rationalize with crazy. Am sorry but you just cannot.
These people are serious and it is time that this country as a whole and our media take them at their word. Read the writing of Republican insider and you will not be the same afterwards. It is definitely a barn burner.
