However, one of the most manufactured characterization of the President's attributes by a Dailykos Front Pager is by far the most amateur analysis I have come to read in dissecting the President's leadership style and on how to influence the President. You can go ahead and read the essay, Influencing President Obama is easy, at your leisure but I will just get to the conclusion of how the best minds of a Dailykos Front Pager thinks:
1) President Obama is an institutionalist. He isn't by any means a reformerSeriously?
2) President Obama has no political ideology. There isn't anything President Obama believes in so rigidly that he's willing to murder someone over it. No deep core beliefs.
3) President Obama doesn't like politics. What Obama likes is governing. Making decisions. Conducting negotiations. Organizing things. He's a doer of stuff, but not any particular stuff.
...if you want to influence Obama:
1. You'll need to get yourself in a high position with some major clout from major institutions.
2. You'll need to not have any particular views that you're not willing to abandon in search of consensus.
3. You'll need to not have any political goals.
4. You'll need to operate in secret.
In other words, you need to be Tim Geithner.
President Obama is an institutionalist, has no political ideology or doesn't like politics?
I am cringing how gullible, narrow minded and irrelevant the DailyKos community has become as I see this talking point becoming the most recommended essay of a progressive community. What a joke! Do I need to say more?
Well, Norm Smallwood, in his article Judging Obama As A Leader dissects President Obama's leadership attributes to identify how it shapes and has shaped his success today and will during his Presidency.
Norm Smallwood writes:
A great deal has been written about the essential attributes of leadership, and there is a huge variety of opinion about what really counts. To combat this lack of consensus, my colleagues Dave Ulrich, Kate Sweetman and I synthesized the most important leadership research of the past four decades and identified five dimensions that are essential to world-class leadership. We call them the Leadership Code and describe them in our book, The Leadership Code. Using the code to analyze Obama's leadership attributes, we find that he's got all the right tools.
He sites five rules to assess President Obama's leadership attribute.
1) Shape the future
2) Make things happen
3) Engage today's talent
4) Build the next generation
5) Invest in yourself
Rule 1: Shape the future. Obama clearly is a visionary with a new approach to politics. He has proclaimed a strategy for moving the country forward that is vastly different from his predecessor's, proposing shifts in our relationship with the rest of the world and in our relationships with one another. In his campaign, he built on the grassroots strategy that Howard Dean had started and threw in a lot of ideas of his own. As president he continues to provide clear views on the economic crisis, the Iraq War, health care reform, climate change and the U.S.' role as a global citizen.
No doubt that the President has indeed been a visionary but let's look at Green Energy to match the attribute with the results of the vision.
What has President Obama has done so far regarding Green Energy to shape the future?
1. Established an Energy Partnership for the Americas to increase research and development in clean coal technology, the next generation of sustainable biofuels and in wind, solar and nuclear energy.
2. To foster investment and job creation in clean-energy manufacturing, promoted additional measures (tax incentives, etc.) to advance clean energy/solar investments and job creation as part of the ARRA.
3. Launched new Climate Service to "help tackle head-on the challenges of mitigating and adapting to climate change".
4. Worked toward deploying a global climate change research and monitoring system.
5. Implemented renewable fuels mandate of 36 billion gallons by 2022, four times what we currently consume, that will have "at least a 50% reduction in GHG emissions when compared to their gas and diesel counterparts."
6. Significantly increased federal spending for research on clean fuels to $10.8 billion, far more than the $6 billion Obama needed to meet his goal."
7. Automakers will be required to meet a fleet-wide average of New Gas Mileage Standards at 35.5 MPH by 2016.
8. A $60 billion investment in renewable and clean energy.
9. developed a Biofuels Roadmap to determine the next steps in growing an advanced biofuels economy to meet the goal to use at least 36 billion gallons of bio-based transportation fuels by 2022 helping create more green energy jobs.
10. established EPA regulations which require large U.S. ships to cut soot emissions by 85 percent.
11. pledged via the Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future that in a decade from now to cut our oil dependency by one-third, and put America's energy future by producing more oil at home and reducing our dependence on oil by leveraging cleaner, alternative fuels and greater efficiency.
The list of the President's leadership to shaping the future is quite impressive not only on Green Energy but also in the manufacturing sector, Health Care Reform, Wall Street Reform, Education reform, etc.
Rule 2: Make things happen. It is easier to describe a bright new future than to make one happen. Obama's task is to turn what he wants into what is done, using his party's majority status in Congress as well as his bully pulpit as a world leader to cajole, collaborate, persuade and counsel others to deliver. His early results are promising. His stimulus bill seems to have pulled the economy out of its nosedive and saved us from an economic collapse. He has extended health insurance to 4 million middle-class children. He has secured the Environmental Protection Administration's authority to limit climate-warming pollution under the Clean Air Act.
That was not the only thing he has accomplished using his party's majority status in Congress but these two short clip can pretty much tells us as progressive why we must ensure that the 2012 election is a repeat of 2008 and give our President the power to move us in the right direction again.
Rule 3: Engage today's talent. Leaders who engage the best talent get short-term hard work done while maintaining high esprit de corps. Obama has mastered this skill. He doesn't do things alone, and he doesn't pretend to. To get elected, he created a national network of organizers and led that talent not just by inspiring support or cooperation but by building a rabidly devoted fan base that would put its lives on hold for the sake of his mission. In office, he took a team-of-rivals approach for selecting his Cabinet, and today he has high levels of support and engagement among his team.
Rule 4: Build the next generation. When leaders build the next generation, they pay attention to building the skills necessary not just for the short term but for the longer future. Obama is laying the groundwork for next-generation skills, pushing ahead on climate change, health care, infrastructure development and in a host of other areas.
Rule 5: Invest in yourself. The core of effectiveness at implementing the first four rules is personal proficiency. Leaders must invest steadily in their intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical improvement to be able to deal with the demands of leadership. Obama himself is a story of leadership as change. Anyone who has read his 1994 autobiography has been introduced to a person always willing to ask: Who am I? What do I stand for? Why? How do I get continually better at delivering on my own promises to myself?
Three forth of the way into the first year of the Obama Presidency, Norm Smallwood concluded that the President has all of the attributes noted above and left the question if he would be able to deliver results. As I have noted above, the proof for the results are in the pudding if we only want to see them.
Today, those who agree with Obama's policies score his leadership attributes high and also believe that his policies will lead to the right results. Those who disagree with his policies and are skeptical of his results shouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water. Don't give Obama's leadership competencies short shrift.
The question I have is how is a President who is an institutionalist, has no political ideology or doesn't like politics can get the following done?
Despite the characterizations of some, Obama’s success rate in winning congressional votes on issues was an unprecedented 96.7% for his first year in office. Though he is often cited as superior to Obama, President Lyndon Johnson’s success rate in 1965 was only 93%. http://n.pr/i3d7cY
