Open thread—Hillary Clinton on where we go from where we are
For the better part of two years, people were screaming for Barack Obama to come and save the Republic. Such is his talismanic force, that he was acknowledged as the true leader of the resistance. Now that he’s on the campaign hustings, he’s been greeted with rapture and thanks.
The person no one’s asked for is Hillary Clinton. Indeed, we’ve been treated to two years of insistence that she vanish from the public scene. That she hasn’t is testament to her strength and her belief in this Republic.
She has written a new section to her book What Happened which sets out what she thinks we need to do to mend our frayed society. She also set it out in a series of tweets.
This is not just a call to renewed civic-mindedness. It’s a plea for empathy, for a recognition of each other as human beings, not pantomime villains embodying all the worst traits.
I know. That last part is difficult with the hard-core Trump supporters. And maybe it’s unachievable with them. I’m not sanguine about the possibilities of healing this country. But our history and common humanity merit the attempt.
