Theory of the 100th monkey
A number of years ago there was a scientific study about a certain group of monkeys and their response when sweet potatoes were dropped where they were living. They began to eat the sweet potatoes and one monkey began washing the potatoes which removed the sand that coated them. After a time other monkeys began to engage in the same behavior.
There was a theory that grew from this study that didn’t fully adhere to the study. In this theory the practice spread slowly throughout the group of monkeys and when the number of monkeys reached 100 it was a kind of critical mass that then enabled the monkeys on another island to start up the same practice. Although this theory did not adhere to the scientific study I think there is a basis for the potential for this theory to be hold some merit.
The theory is that the monkeys share a morphogenetic field or a shared field of consciousness or awareness. Like all living things the monkeys contain the impulse to evolve. The first monkey that began washing its sweet potato was more receptive to the evolving impulses contained within it. Other monkeys began to take up this behavior perhaps because they were mimicking the other monkey but the impulse to change their behavior would still be in an unconscious response to evolve that they saw exhibited by the other monkey.
The essence of the theory is that there is a field of consciousness and the monkeys are participants in this field of consciousness. They didn’t have smart phones and they didn’t communicate through smoke signals but somehow over time without those tools the monkeys developed a behavior that indicated that they were evolving and their evolution was spreading to other monkeys who they had no contact with and then over time the behavior developed and grew in a pattern.
What holds true with monkeys would seem to also hold true for humans. Although we have easy access to means of communication including smart phones we also have a morphogenetic field or field of consciousness or awareness that we all share and that field is available to everyone everywhere all of the time.
Just like the monkeys we are also affected by the field of consciousness whether we are aware of it or not. And again like the monkeys there are some who respond more immediately to the impulses that are moving through this field of consciousness than others. But just like the monkeys over time the impulses and ideas moving from the field of consciousness into the field of human awareness spreads and over time the new ways become the accepted ways of being and behaving.
It would then make sense to conclude that all of life is connected through a field of consciousness that affects all life whether we are aware of it or not and that the impulses moving from the field of consciousness that all life shares is moving us in the direction of evolution.
In the case of the study involving the monkeys they were evolving by changing their behavior and washing the sweet potatoes. In the case of humanity our need to evolve is most certainly a great need at this time. If we continue down the path we are heading we will end up destroying ourselves through war or planetary destruction. We will end up through greed and exploitation and the conflict that arises from those destructive impulses in destroying ourselves. This may not happen tomorrow but if we use our powers of deductive reasoning it is clear that we are heading rapidly in this direction. If we want to survive and we are aware of where we are heading then we must change direction.
Luckily for us there are impulses moving through the field of the whole of consciousness that is growing stronger that is affecting those who are the most receptive to it first but just as with the monkeys it will continue to grow and to spread and the more it grows and spreads the more clear it will become and the more powerful the force will become and just as with the behavior of the monkeys who transformed to come into alignment with an evolving universe so will the thoughts and behaviors of humanity.
All of life is interconnected and all of life is being affected by the impulse to evolve. This is not a justification for passivity, on the contrary it is a call to find ways to grow the new impulses that humanity is receiving. These impulses will spark us to recognize and realize the connection of all of life and will motivate us to develop systems that reflect the new understanding and to reject beliefs and systems that don’t recognize and realize that all of life is connected.
