Sure, Hitler was a genocidal maniac, but the poor loved him!

Sure, Hitler was a genocidal maniac, but the poor loved him!

So, this is what passes for contrarian discourse on the Bernie left.

Hitler merely "played upon" already-existing anti-semitism.

No, Walker: Hitler didn't play upon it. It was the entire raison d'etre of his political movement. His appeal wasn't economic; it was cultural and xenophobic.

That someone of the supposed "left" can find a way to wash away Hitler's crimes is no longer gobsmacking.

This "left" went hammer and tongs after Barack Obama assumed office, or even before he took the oath. (Looking at you, Aravosis.)

One of the greatest disappointments in my political life was realizing that racism truly did exist on the left, as it chastised Pres. Obama for not being a Magic Negro and doing things the way they wanted it done.

He didn't arrest the bankers. He didn't impose single-payer. He didn't become a liberal George W. Bush.

It's no surprise that people like Bragman would have this to say about Hitler. They don't really grok democracy; they'd be happy with an authoritarian, like, say, Hugo Chavez, as long as he was doing what they thought was needed.

They support Bernie because he speaks to their desire to "get things done", no matter the democratic niceties.

What the extreme left and right share is a disdain for the politics of compromise. Compromise produces tainted initiatives. Political life is a zero-sum game: both sides can't win, there has to be a loser. This maximalist position has long been rampant among the right. What we've now seen is it taking hold among the extreme left. (Which really shouldn't be surprising; Soviet Russia is a model, not a warning.)

These people are not "allies". They have no sympathy for the concerns of the Democratic base. To them, the Democratic Party is even more of a threat than the Republicans. Republicans they can understand, as they share the same dictatorial impulse. Democrats, with their insistence on democratic norms, are weak and beyond repair.

If this group ever came to power, it would be doing the same damage to the Constitution that Donald Trump is causing. At the end of the day, the means are the same. It would burn the village in order to save it.
