Growing our humanity

Growing our humanity

I remember two times when President Obama spoke after the tragedy at Sandy Hook when he teared up. Some people thought he was acting and some people saw him as being weak. That couldn't be further from my experience. I saw a man with an open heart. I saw a man who was expressing his humanity. I saw a man who was expressing compassion and empathy.  I saw him as the opposite of fake. I saw him as someone who was expressing his humanity through his willingness to experience this horrible loss personally. That cannot be faked because it is personal it is actually felt and therefore it is not acting.

I think the pain that he was expressing was not just for the unspeakable loss but also for the pain of realizing that there was a lack in this country's will to change. He was feeling the pain that was present because even in the light of this traumatic event not enough people were willing to change. He was facing the pain of the realization that the will to change was not present.

Not only was it not sufficiently present but there were people who were then and still are actively digging in their heels and demonstrating their unwillingness to change. They were and are actively engaging in the putting up of a wall the enables them to disassociate and to show a total lack of feeling about what has taken place. They are deeply resisting change and the outcome is their lack of humanity.

All of this being the case we are going to need to grow our sense of humanity if we want the current state of affairs to change and it is not possible to truly do that unless we are willing to feel the pain that exists due to of our lack of humanity. This void needs to be felt personally.

The pain of our inhumanity feels intolerable, it hurts. The only way we can transform the pain and the hurt is by experiencing how utterly intolerable the void of our humanity feels because when we are willing to feel that void we build up our will to change, we grow in our willingness to change. We feel the deep need to find a way out and it grows the willingness for us to change as a group because although the change is individual it is connected to everyone else and needs everyone else in order to have to momentum necessary to create change.

The only way we will be able to find a way out is if we grow in our will to look for a way out as a whole, as one family and therefore the only way out is through honoring our interconnectedness. It is through honoring our interconnectedness that we will find unified solutions which is what will be necessary if we are looking to find what is humane. We will need to grow new systems that honor our diversity because it is through our diversity that we will find the means of growing our strength which comes through our unity.

For me President Obama demonstrated his humanity. He showed what it means to lead. He demonstrated for us as President of the United States the presence of an open heart. In having an open heart he appeared vulnerable to the predators of the world who have put up a wall to any real place in themselves for compassion. They have fixations but the nature of a fixation is very different from the nature of compassion. Fixed things are frozen in place which makes them unmovable. Living things need to move and grow and change and to adapt. Compassion is a quality of being that is filled with life because it must be shared in order for it to have real meaning. Our compassion and our humanity are connected, they are as one.

So it makes sense to me that we need to find ways that are unique to each person to grow our sense of humanity because if we do that we will reach a kind of critical mass where the presence of our humanity out weighs our inhumanity which will cause our lack of humanity to begin to collapse and when the support structures go the inhumanity won't have what it needs to sustain itself and it will lose it's power and those who have embodied it will lose their power.

It is possible for us to see that we have a choice. We can either live in the pain and suffering of the expressions of our inhumanity or we can grow the potential that will enable us to experience the joy of our humanity. I think for anyone who truly understands that this is a choice and that we have the capacity to change and that we have the ability and the creativity to find a different way of being the choice easy because the choice is clear.
