Gaslighting in our times: Melania Trump edition
Today Donald Trump's wife Melania debuted her initiative as "First Lady"* to curb cyber-bullying.
I'm not even going to point out the sheer audacity of this while being married to the world's chief cyber-bullier. I'll just put this out here in her interaction with Russian-American journalist Julia Ioffe:
In the 24 hours since her profile of Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, appeared in GQ magazine, the Russian-American journalist has received a torrent of antisemitic, vitriolic and threatening messages from supporters of the Republican frontrunner.
In the deeply disturbing response to her piece, Ioffe said she sees a frightening future of what freedom of the press – and the country – might look like under President Trump.
“What happens if Donald Trump is elected?” Ioffe said. “We’ve seen the way he bids his supporters to attack the media, his proposal to change libel laws to make it easier to sue journalists.”
At no point did Melania come to Ioffe's defense. In fact, as the article states, she issued a statement condemning it. She issued no such statement condemning the anti-Semitic vitriol to which Ioffe was subjected.
This crime family stokes the worst instincts in its followers. It is the apotheosis of the past 50 years of Republican politics, as the GOP morphed from a conservative party into an outright fascist one. I'm sure the cyber-bullies Melania is targeting are those who are mean to her and her family, not he victims of her family's supporters. It is gaslighting in its vilest form.
It's beyond ludicrous that this woman is going to hang her time as "First Lady"* on countering cyber-bullying, when the entire modus operandi of her vile clan is to bully and threaten those who cross it. I'm not one of the few people who say that Melania should be given a chance. She was, and she failed, just like her entire family. This initiative is nothing but putting lipstick on a pig, and as with anything else the Trump name touches, it will crash in fire.
