Monday was Funday

What can be said about the events of the past almost-24 hours that hasn't been said already?

Yesterday, the offices, home, and hotel room of Trump fixer Michael Cohen were raided by the FBI. This was done on a referral by special counsel Robert Mueller, but handled by the New York FBI office and the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Both the judge who signed off on the warrant and the US Attorney were appointed by Trump.

As others have said, this is big. This is bigger than Flynn, or Gates, or Papadopoulos. Cohen is not only Trump's personal lawyer, as far as we can tell he's a Tom Hagen-like figure: Trump is his only client.

Also, as was bruited ad nauseam yesterday, it's almost impossible to obtain a warrant to raid a lawyer's premises, for obvious good reasons. That Cohen was raided indicates that there was strong evidence of criminal action on his part.

Trump had a meltdown on national TV after the raids, going so far as to say that if he'd known Jeff Sessions was going to recuse himself from all Russian matters, he wouldn't have appointed him. He admitted that he saw the attorney general's job as running interference for him and obstructing justice.

This is the "red line" Trump always swore he'd fire Mueller for if he crossed it. Mueller crossed it, and it turns out there's really nothing Trump can do. Fire Mueller now and even the supine Republican Congress may be forced to act—probably not with impeachment, but by reappointing Mueller and securing his position.

Trump is nothing but a low-rent confidence trickster who rose far above his station. He thought he could run DC like he ran his real estate scams. He thought that because he was on Page Six, he was a powerful man. He's now getting a taste of what real power looks like, and he won't survive it.
