Friday open thread—Happy birthday, Obamacare!
It was eight years ago today that the United States, the world's richest, most powerful state, started lurching towards making health care a right, not a privilege, with the signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Ever since, Republicans have tried to hobble it, to ratfink it, to destroy it. The only thing you could be sure that the GOP Congress with which Pres. Obama was saddled would do would be to send him Obamacare repeal bills.
Then, finally, when the GOP achieved the holy grail of control of the White House and Congress, it... failed miserably. People realized that they liked the ACA, and flooded town halls and message lines with pleas to not repeal it.
The Trump regime is trying in ways big and small to kill Obamacare by a thousand cuts. This is going to be a major issue in the upcoming midterms. Democrats have to run as the party of not only preserving Obamacare, but making it better.
So, hoist a glass to Obamacare. Its passage has begun to change the country for the better.
