Open thread—Rex gets wrecked
If anyone is surprised that Rex Tillerson was on thin ice, you haven't been reading the papers. Ever since "moron-gate", his days were numbered. And him going off-message on both North Korea and the UK nerve agent attack were the last straws.
There are reports that Trump is "ecstatic", and has been the happiest he's been since the Inauguration. Of course he is. He's a chaos junkie, and he needs bigger and bigger fixes. It won't last. If tonight's special election goes to the Democrats, expect his foul mood to return.
Tillerson was no great shakes as a Secretary of State. But now we have the situation where there will supposedly be a summit meeting between Trump and a nuclear-armed dictator, and the country has no chief diplomat. As Maggie Haberman tweeted, Trump now thinks he has a grasp of the presidency. That he is delusional in this manner is, as the kids say, not good. His inner circle keeps feeding his ego, because of course their fates are tied to his. While this might make them safe in the short-term, it's a strategy which will have dire consequences for the country and the world.
Welcome to another day in Trumpland.
