The other Fredo rears his Odo-like head

Remember Trump-Russia? Remember treason?

We may have forgotten in the maelstrom of Bart Kavanaugh news. But you know who hasn’t forgotten? That’s right, Bobby Three Sticks.

And remember Eric Trump? For the most part he’s kept his head down, not being as much of a target as his brother Don Jr. But today, a story in the Wall Street Journal brought the other Fredo back onto center stage.

President Trump personally directed an effort in February to stop Stormy Daniels from publicly describing an alleged sexual encounter with Mr. Trump, people familiar with the events say.

In a phone call, Mr. Trump instructed his then-lawyer Michael Cohen to seek a restraining order against the former adult-film actress, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, through a confidential arbitration proceeding, one of the people said. Messrs. Trump and Cohen had learned shortly before that Ms. Clifford was considering giving a media interview about her alleged relationship with Mr. Trump, despite having signed an October 2016 nondisclosure agreement.

Mr. Trump told Mr. Cohen to coordinate the legal response with Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons, and another outside lawyer who had represented Mr. Trump and the Trump Organization in other matters, the people said. Eric Trump, who is running the company with his brother in Mr. Trump’s absence, then tasked a Trump Organization staff attorney in California with signing off on the arbitration paperwork, these people said.

That’s right. In the never-ending quest that the Trump boys have for love and affection from their father, Eric Trump jumped on the obstruction of justice train with fixer Michael Cohen.

We had assumed that, aside from the occasional broadside, Eric had pretty much remained out of his father’s affairs. But now it seems that he was smack dab in the middle of them.

One has to wonder what kind of psychological damage Donald Trump inflicted on his children. The boys, certainly, never measured up, always jockeying for attention. Ivanka, fortunately, has other ways to allure her father. But the only currency the boys have is doing their father’s dirty work. Not everyone is suited to be a criminal; it comes naturally to Trump, but the boys have shown themselves to be rank pikers. And when they try to go big, they of course fail spectacularly.

So now, both Eric and Don Jr are involved in matters under Bob Mueller’s purview, via the offices of the Southern District of New York. Soon, Ivanka too will be drawn in. And then we’ll see what Trump does. Does he summon that one nugget of selflessness and sacrifice himself for his children? Or, as is more likely, does he throw them under the bus, as he does with anyone who doesn’t serve his needs? Eric is about to find out.
