I blame you

I blame you

I blame you.

I blame you, the white "liberal" whose precious conscience didn't allow him to vote for war-monger, neo-liberal Hillary Clinton. I blame you for allowing the perfect to be the enemy of the good. Was Hillary Clinton "perfect"? Define "perfect"? From where many communities in the firing line of the Trump regime now stand, she was damned near perfect for their issues. She was one of the most liberal senators during her time in that chamber. She and Bernie Sanders had almost identical voting records. But, she wasn't "perfect". And she was going to win anyway, so you felt you had the luxury of a protest vote. You ignored her warnings. You ignored Barack Obama's warnings. You fell back on the premise that Americans weren't stupid enough to give their votes to a sociopath, in contravention of every piece of evidence which surrounded you. You felt you had to take a "stand" against "business as usual". So you voted for Jill Stein, or you wrote in Bernie Sanders, or, God help you, you actually voted for Moron Hitler. And now like this unrepentant, vile person who still sees nothing wrong in what she did you cry crocodile tears:

Allies like this are why those of us who don't fall in the "white, male, Christian" demographic look askance at you.

I blame you.

I blame every Trump voter who told pollsters that they didn't approve of his excesses, but liked Mrs. Clinton less. You knew better. The mouth breathers who will throw themselves bodily to take a bullet are beyond hope. Sure, you vote Republican out of habit, but this time, this time, you knew something was different. You knew this wasn't normal. And you still voted for him. I don't blame the racists who voted their animus, their fear, their vitriol; they're like scorpions, and will do what they will. I blame the "fiscally conservative / socially liberal" liars. Fiscally, you voted for a party that is going to bankrupt the nation. Socially, you voted for a party which will take us back to the 1850s. You failed on both counts. I don't want to hear that you have "dear friends" who are immigrants or children of immigrants. You voted to put a bull's eye on their backs. That's why no one can take seriously the line "Not all Republicans." Yes, "all Republicans" voted their moral cowardice. And now that the shit is hitting the fan, they come crawling out of the woodwork, saying "But we didn't know." You knew. You just didn't care.

I blame you.

I blame every lazy, irresponsible, unbothered person who didn't vote last November, or the November before, or any November for that matter. I don't include those whose votes were suppressed. Voter suppression is a real thing. But now, registered voters are voicing their disapproval of the Trump regime in polling by staggering numbers. Where were you 10 months ago, when your opinion actually mattered? I'm not even talking about those unregistered to vote, but those who were registered and didn't bother to get up off the couch. If you opposed Trump, opposed what Republicans wanted to do, had the ability to vote, and didn't, then this shitshow is on you. A democracy is only for those who participate and win. And by your indolence, you allowed the reactionaries, the fascists, the racists to win. (Even if temporarily.) I don't care what you're telling pollsters. Good for you, assuage your guilt. Only if you get to every election and vote your supposed beliefs does your opinion matter. I'm sure Dreamers are very heartened by your concern without action.

Because of you, my community and communities of color are facing something not seen since the darkest days of Jim Crow. Because of you, immigrants didn't avail themselves of the help on hand in Houston for fear of deportation. Because of you, the Republic is at its breaking point.

Spare me your sympathies. I just don't care.
