Moron Hitler went to the UN today. And it turned out even worse than one could have imagined.
He threatened to annihilate North Korea.
He promised to withdraw the US from the Iran nuclear deal.
He fulminated against "rogue states", blissfully unaware that by his words he was casting the US as a pariah.
I'm old enough to remember people on the Left raging that Hillary Clinton was a hawk who would get us into wars, while Donald Trump was a dove who would ratchet down the American Empire. What a difference eight months makes.
Of course, this is just what Russia and China want to see. They yearn for the end of the Pax Americana, where they can expand their influence, bullying their weaker neighbors, returning to the politics of the interwar years: transactional, not burdened by niceties of human rights. That Trump is doing everything he can to make this vision come true gives one pause.
Yesterday, the news broke that "Lordy, there are tapes". Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign adviser, had been a target of FISA surveillance since 2014. Anyone he spoke with was hoovered up in the signals intelligence. That includes Trump and Mike Pence. One can't but wonder if, upon this news, Trump decided to throw every piece of reactionary, genocidal rhetoric into his speech, to hopefully deflect away from the noose tightening around his neck.
All he did was bring this country into more ill-repute. We are not just a laughing-stock. We're a rogue animal, liable to lash out at any moment. I wouldn't be at all surprised that, after all this is over, it's revealed that Trump was a sleeper KGB mole, groomed to perhaps destroy the post-war system.
His manly talk will have its admirers. (Normally sagacious Ana Navarro being one of them.) But anyone with half a brain will experience a mixture of disbelief and horror. An American president* is ending the system which his predecessors built up over seven decades. It's as if the US had lost a war, but not a shot has been fired.
