Imagine a work of art which was so scandalous, so controversial, that it caused a riot.
That was just what Igor Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps was. The scale of the "riot" has grown with the retelling. But there was a reaction to this piece of music and its attendant ballet, which one can say ushered in the 20th century in music. (And, only a year later, the rest of the century was ushered in by an assassin's bullet in Sarajevo.)
We just don't have any piece of art today which could engender that sort of reaction. In a cultural milieu which provides all things to all people, shock is harder and harder to come by. We are a jaded culture.
