On #Charlottesville

What was a congregation of the moronic has turned into a full-blown Nazi riot. The gathering has been declared an unlawful assembly, and troops have been deployed.

I, for one, am glad the Nazis marched.

We can't treat a disease until we acknowledge it. We can't devise a cure until we identify the pathology.

This is probably the most helpful thing that inhuman cretin David Duke has ever said:

I know, "not all white people". And many of those "not all white people" are reading this essay. But there is no arguing with facts. Trump was put into office to be a Hitler. He was put into office on the back of white rage, white fear, white animus. He was put into office by people who see equity as an existential threat. Diversity is a zero-sum game for them. People of color rising means they're falling. They can't see that, as a conservative once said, a rising tide lifts all boats. All they see is their privilege being threatened, and they will lash out like a dying beast.

You don't argue with Nazis. You don't debate Nazis. You crush them, with as much force as needed. Why? Because "debate" indicates there is a valid argument to be made. There isn't. There is no valid argument which Nazis can ever make. Their arguments led to the gas chamber. That is not a history I will relive, if I have any ounce of strength in my body.

But the out and proud Nazis are just the gangrenous extremities. Again, David Duke was right. White America put Trump into office. This same White America now has to have a gut check, look at what's happening in Virginia, and decide if this is what it wants to happen in its name. Does it truly want David Duke to speak for it? Is that what it wants for the country?

And those who don't vote also have to have a gut-check moment. Is apathy any longer a viable option? Your personal life may be going swimmingly and you see no need to get involved in the messiness of life. But if you don't get involved, if only by the exercise of the basic civic duty of voting, that messiness will eventually find you, and subsume you.

This is a continuing open thread.
