After the 25th Amendment

After the 25th Amendment

This can't go on much longer, can it? We currently have a man in a full blown mental crisis occupying the White House. This man has his finger on the nuclear trigger. The walls are closing in on him, he's paranoid, vindictive, enraged, and there's no telling what he will do.

Let's pretend for a moment that Mike Pence leads a coup and uses the provisions in the 25th Amendment to remove an ill president. Then what?

Well, this will solve almost nothing for the GOP. Trumpism is bigger than Trump. The same questions will swirl, the investigations will continue, indictments will be handed down. If anything, removing Donald Trump might make things worse.

Imagine the GOP having to admit that it hitched its wagon to a madman. Which would be worse for it politically? Admit that it put the country and world at risk for pure power, or continue with the charade? Nothing we've seen in the modern Republican Party indicates that it can admit error. Like Trump, it will double down on falsity, daring you to call a lie a lie.

An Acting President Mike Pence will not solve the question of legitimacy. He is as tainted as the rest of the cabal. If anything, he will only make the questions louder. "Why should we trust you, when you stood by Trump until it was no longer politically feasible?"

The GOP is in an untenable political situation. Stand by Trump, and it aids and abets a madman. Rise against Trump, and Trump's base will turn on it, while the wider electorate won't forget that it stood by Trump until it was hurting it politically. That's what happens when you're a party whose sole raison d'etre is to accumulate power and install a dystopian vision of this country. Eventually, you will fall from a great height.

Removing Trump by means of the 25th Amendment will do the GOP no favors. If it wants to salvage anything politically, impeachment in the House and conviction in the Senate are its only options. But we know Republicans don't have the courage for that.

It all could have been so different. But, her emails.
