Of course, we regret that illegitimate president Donald Trump is in the White House. That's expected. But it seems a whole lot of his fans are starting to feel the gnawing terror that they've made a grave mistake. For your weekend open thread, I share a few of their come to Jesus tweets.
And to end, this might be the saddest/most infuriating one.
I'm honestly not putting these up here to mock. The fact is that we have a politically illiterate populace which is easily swayed by ginned-up rhetoric and easy solutions. We've been infantilized by a culture of complaint and expectation. We think that what we see on television is reality; and if what we see is a "successful businessman", then that person, by virtue of having a hit television show, is suitable for the most powerful office in the world. It's our task as people of good will to reverse this pernicious trend. It won't be easy. We might not succeed completely. But if we don't even try, we will, as Neil Postman said, amuse ourselves to death.
